A
Few Thoughts from Jeffrey Hollender, President
As you read these words the season is now officially in full
swing. I don't mean summer or baseball. I'm talking about the
Presidential campaign season, that quintessentially American
rite of political passage that sets our democracy apart from
so many others. There are only a few months left until it's
November 2 climax, and between here and there, I'm dedicating
myself to doing everything I can to get everyone to vote.
Born in an age of kings and despots to a Western world that
had known little else for thousands of years, the United States
of America represented the most novel of political ideas. When
not expressing astonishment at the sheer audacity of the nascent
American people to dare to propose to govern themselves, contemporary
pundits marveled at the system of government that had been designed
to bring that outlandish concept to life. It was to be a government
formed not of those who possessed wealth and status, but one
run by all the people for all the people. And whether it would
work was the talk of the day.
Indeed, George Washington, in his first inaugural address, said,
“The preservation of the sacred fire of liberty and the
destiny of the republican model of government are justly considered,
as deeply, perhaps as finally staked, on the experiment entrusted
to the hands of the American people.”
What Washington was saying was that it was up to us. The constitutional
system of government that had been designed to derive its just
powers from the consent of the governed would only survive as
long as the governed continued to give that consent and participate
in the process of democracy. Should we falter in that mission,
should we cease to be an active and engaged part of our nation's
civic life, then the experiment would fail.
Some 215 years later, we find ourselves headed in that direction.
Voter registration and turnout rates are falling, and more and
more people seem to be coming to the ill-conceived conclusion
that their participation in public life is for naught.
In the last Presidential election, only 76% of all voting age
citizens registered to vote and just 51% of registered voters
cast a ballot. I say “only” and “just”
because what these numbers mean to me is that 24% of all eligible
voters feel so disenfranchised that they don't even bother to
register, and half don't show up at the ballot box. Compared
to voter participation rates that average around 90% in countries
as disparate as Italy, Iceland and Cambodia, our own rates look
pretty meager. No wonder a 2001 study conducted by the Center
for Voting and Democracy ranked the U.S. in the lower third
of the world's democracies when it comes to electoral participation.
In fact, in the shining light of the democratic ideal, our nation's
own numbers seem pretty catastrophic. We're not exactly honoring
the enormous struggle it took to win our country's independence,
nor paying proper respect to the countless sacrifices that so
many have made and continue to make to keep it that way. With
this in mind, I've dedicated myself to turning as many non-voters
into voters as I can.
Some of this work will be personal, but not all of it. Seventh
Generation is joining forces with National Voice (a Tides Center
project) to sponsor Voteworks, a non-partisan initiative aimed
at urging and helping businesses do everything they can to convince
their employees, partners, customers and communities of the
importance of voting.
Voteworks has developed a whole set of programs and ideas that
companies can use to increase voter participation in November's
election. There's an outreach team that's ready to take their
show on the road and a web site with background information
and a wealth of online tools.
It's quite an operation, and in these highly charged partisan
times, I think it's important to note that this is a non-partisan
effort. While I certainly have my preferences for local and
national offices, these personal choices must remain just that.
Given both my own protests and those of our company against
the influence our nation's largest companies seek to wield over
the political landscape, it would be hypocritical to do otherwise.
Much as it may be hard to accept, businesses should stay out
of partisan politics.
And anyway, as important as I think it is that we elect the
“right” people, the real point isn't for whom I
want people to vote. It's that I simply want them to cast that
ballot. Whether my favored candidates win or lose, I'll be a
whole lot happier with the outcome if it represents the will
of most, if not all, of the people, not just the half that go
to the trouble of showing up on election day. That's the thing
I can't accept.
Make no mistake about it: Elections are the lifeblood of our
country. Each vote is a single cell that carries life sustaining
oxygen to the Republic. When we don't perform this essential
task, the body politic sickens and democracy fades. In a post-9/11
world, filled as it is with so many outbursts of patriotism,
I am astonished by the number of people who fail to grasp this
essential point and see in its light the fundamental truth that
it really doesn't matter how many times you salute Old Glory;
it's how many elections in which you vote. If you're not voting,
all the flag waving in the world can't undo your lack of patriotism.
Voting is a gift and we both receive and give. It is a right
given to us by the sacrifices of others and a responsibility
we have to the very cause of liberty itself. It is the thing
that keeps us free. When we fail to vote, we surrender that
freedom to others. When we say voting doesn't matter, we devalue
our cherished civil liberties to the point of unspeakable harm.
The only time voting doesn't matter is when it doesn't happen.
So it is that I'm asking each of you to participate in the public
life of your country. There's plenty of time left to do it and
plenty you can do to make a difference. Learn about the issues.
Explore the candidates' positions. Make educated choices. Register
to vote if you haven't already. And then go to the polls on
November 2nd. It's a simple but wholly remarkable act—one
made all the more so by the fact that merely pulling a lever
or checking a box provides the greatest and most powerful defense
we have from the world's true terror: Apathy and the eager tyranny
it so effortlessly breeds.

Each
year since 1988, the EPA has released a document called the
Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) - a report that's designed
to let Americans know how much of what hazardous pollutants
are annually emitted into their air, water and soil. This year's
report, for only the second time in the program's history, showed
a rise in national pollution levels. But that might not even
be the half of it. A coalition of environmental groups say their
research shows that methods used to compile the TRI seriously
under-report the actual amounts of toxins being released from
coast to coast.
The new TRI report, which contains data for the year 2002, found
that the overall quantities of toxic pollutants being released
into the environment jumped 5%, the highest level of increase
in the program's 15-year history.
Altogether, manufacturers, power producers, and government facilities
added 4.79 million pounds of hazardous materials to the environment.
Leading the poisonous pack was mercury, a potent neurotoxin
whose emissions increased by 10%. Releases of lead rose 3%,
and dioxin, one of the most deadly dangers of all, was up 5%.
Power plants, largely in the form of those burning coal, increased
their pollution output by 3.5%, while pollution from military
bases, nuclear waste sites, and other federal facilities jumped
9%.
These are just some of the highlights (or lowlights, rather)
of this year's report; and as unpleasant as they might be to
contemplate, they may not represent the end of the story. According
to a study released in June by the Environmental Integrity Project
(EIP) and the Galveston-Houston Association for Smog Prevention
(GHASP), the EPA fails to include large amounts of emissions
in its TRI report. The result is a false picture of national
environmental health and an annual under-reporting of an estimated
330 million pounds of unhealthy pollutants.
The new study, Who's Counting, is based on work done by the
Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, which found that
actual measured air pollution releases in that state were significantly
greater than those being reported by the TRI.
In Houston, for example, actual air emissions were 2 to 14 times
higher (depending on the pollutant in question) than the amounts
declared in the TRI report. Applying these various discrepancies
nationwide, researchers produced revised air pollution estimates
for all 50 states. The 6 states with the largest estimated increases
were Texas (which had 159.6 million pounds of additional air
pollution or a 15% increase), New Mexico (1 million pounds or
a 100% increase); Louisiana (56 million pounds or a 74% increase),
Oklahoma (7.1 million pounds or a 41% increase); Iowa (8.7 million
pounds or a 36% increase); and Illinois (17.5 million pounds
or a 30% increase). States with at least 5 million additional
estimated pounds of unreported emissions were Kentucky, Mississippi,
Pennsylvania and Ohio. Altogether, the EIP and GHASP estimate
that at least 16% of the country's air pollution has been kept
off the books.
The adjusted data also shows an increase in the number of known
carcinogens being released. According to the revised figures,
national releases of butadiene, a major carcinogen, are 432%
higher than reported. Ethylene emissions are 417% greater, while
the figure for propylene is 440%. Though the 2001 TRI reported
releases of almost 6 million pounds of benzene, the report said
this figure was likely closer to 20 million pounds.
Going a step further, the groups also said the EPA was well
aware of the problem and has knowingly released TRI reports
that do not accurately reflect the true state of the country's
environmental quality. Among the TRI's many deficiencies:
- Only
about 650 substances are covered by the TRI. Missing are
tens of thousands of other chemicals released in amounts
too small to meet the various reporting thresholds mandated
by law. In addition, only facilities with 10 or more employees
need participate. Smaller operations need not submit data
even though these “mom & pop” businesses
are most likely to lack advanced pollution control technologies.
- The
vast bulk of the data submitted for the TRI is based on
estimates created by manufacturers themselves and not on
actual measurements and testing. In 2001, the General Accounting
Office estimated that only 4% of all emissions reported
to the EPA were based on physically collected, real-world
data. The remaining 96% represent little more than corporate
guesswork that many feel is a wishful whitewash at best.
- The
EPA has adopted weaker, not stronger, air monitoring rules.
Old rules mandated that major air pollution sources conduct
on-going monitoring sufficient to reveal whether or not
federal pollution limits were being met. In 2004, the agency
revised these requirements saying that this direct monitoring
need only occur “more than once every five years.”

We
may use them to look, feel and smell better, but when you get
right down to it, we don't really know what cosmetics and personal
care products are really up to when we use them. They're largely
unregulated and don't require any proof of safety before they
can be sold. All told, they're a bit of a mystery. Yet, we apply
them all over ourselves—all day every day. A new report
from a coalition of organizations says it might be a good idea
to rethink that habit for a number of unhealthy reasons.
The new report by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), Skin
Deep, contains a wealth of data on the industry in general
and some 7,500 brand name products in particular, and that data
has many wondering if all too many personal care companies are
being careless about public health.
According to researchers, cosmetics and personal care products
are loaded with things they probably shouldn't contain. Though
the FDA has identified about 10,500 different ingredients in
personal care products, the study's authors found that only
11% of these have been tested for safety. Further, these tests
have not been conducted by independent scientists or agencies.
Instead, they were supervised by the Cosmetic Industry Review
Board, a group appointed by the industry's Cosmetics, Toiletry
and Fragrance Association. In terms of the 7,500 individual
products examined in the study, a grand total of 28 (that's
no typo!) had all their ingredients fully evaluated.
How is this possible? The authors of the report point to lax
oversight by the Food & Drug Administration, which is not
legally empowered to require that personal care ingredients
or products be tested for safety before they are put on store
shelves.
In spite of this glaring regulatory loophole, a survey of some
2,300 people found that the average adult uses nine personal
care products on a typical day and exposes him- or herself to
approximately 126 different chemicals as a result. Over 25%
of all women use at least 15 products daily compared to just
1% of all men.
One out of every 120 of the products studied contained ingredients
identified by government authorities as known or probable human
carcinogens. Fifty-five percent of all the products examined
were found to contain “penetration enhancers,” ingredients
that can increase a product's absorption through the skin and
into the bloodstream, where users are further and perhaps more
dangerously exposed to its ingredients. Almost 70% of all products
analyzed contained ingredients that can be contaminated with
impurities linked to cancer and other health problems.
Compounding the basic problem of hazardous ingredients was the
study's finding that many products have directions or ingredients
that violate the industry's own recommendations for safe use.
In total, 54 products were discovered to have such problems.
Examples of this included a hydroquinone-containing fade cream
to lighten age spots that directed users to leave it on the
skin when, in fact, it should be washed off immediately. An
acne treatment contained ceteareth-20, but the product's label
failed to warn consumers that this ingredient should not be
applied to damaged skin. Sodium borate and boric acid were found
in certain diaper rash creams even though these substances should
not be used on infant skin. Almost 10% of all moisturizers and
6% of all sunscreens were found to contain alpha and beta hydroxy
acids, which can increase the risk of skin cancer.
Though people are exposed to the majority of these ingredients
in tiny amounts, these exposures occur almost daily. Scientists
are unsure of what health problems might result from a lifetime
of such continuous, low-level contacts. Indeed, the chronic
exposures to minute amounts of chemical hazards are thought
by many to be one of the chief mechanisms by which cosmetic
products damage human health.
Until more is known and regulations are dramatically strengthened,
consumers are advised to scrutinize cosmetic and personal care
product labels carefully and use only those formulas whose ingredients
have all been tested for safety.

the report and a searchable database of the specific hazards
contained in 7,500 brand name products, visit

Social
scientists have always been fascinated by the startling rise
in crime rates that took place in the 20th Century, and the
equally precipitous drop-off that those same rates experienced
in the 90s. Now researchers think they may have discovered what
really did all the wrongdoing: The vast amounts of lead introduced
into the post-WWII environment by leaded gasoline. And that's
not all...hormone disruptors may be getting in on all the illicit
action, too.
The first of several recent studies to indicate that environmental
pollutants may play a key role in overall levels of crime reached
its conclusion quite by accident. Economic consultant Rick Nevin
was hired by the Department of Housing and Urban Development
(HUD) to conduct a cost-benefit analysis of removing lead paint
from public housing projects. While the advantages of lead-free
housing were clear (and clearly priceless in our view), Nevin
was startled to find a fairly obvious relationship between the
widespread use of leaded gasoline and the violent crime wave
experienced by the country from approximately 1950 to 1990.
The use of leaded gasoline exploded in the boom following WWII,
and by the time this use peaked in the mid-1970s, nearly everyone
had some level of lead poisoning. Children were especially vulnerable.
At the time lead was eliminated from gasoline, close to 80%
of all children had levels of lead that would exceed today's
federal safety limit of 10 micrograms per deciliter of blood.
Inner city children were especially hard hit, living as they
often did in lead-painted housing and breathing air with high
concentrations of automobile exhaust.
Nevin found that the much-discussed juvenile crime wave of the
1950s began just as the first generation of children significantly
exposed to leaded gasoline became teenagers. In subsequent years,
as lead contamination in the environment steadily increased,
so did rates of violent crime. This trend suddenly reversed
in the 1990s, which Nevin found coincided with the first generation
of children to enjoy a substantially less lead-contaminated
environment as a result of the lead gasoline phase-out reached
their teens. Nevin also pointed out that nearly identical corresponding
patterns could be noted in Great Britain, France, Australia
and other countries.
The results of the research dovetail nicely with other studies
on the effects lead has on human behavior. Fordham University
law professor Deborah Denno, for example, studied some 3,000
different attributes to see if it was possible to identify determining
factors for criminal behavior. Lead exposure was found to be
the number one most reliable indicator.
Fortunately, lead levels have declined precipitously since the
1970s. According to the EPA, the number of children under age
6 with high blood lead levels has fallen from 4.7 million in
1978 to 300,000 today. As more and more lead paint is removed
from homes, this number is expected to drop further, and lead
poisoning, hopefully, will become a thing of the past.
But just as lead is fading out, a new behavioral threat may
be emerging. According to new research from Japan, rising levels
of hormone-disrupting chemicals in the environment may be causing
more than endocrine damage to the human body. According to reports
from the June 25th meeting of the Japan Society of Endocrine
Disrupters Research, these substances may also be causing abnormal
behaviors and triggering crimes of their own.
This recent meeting highlighted several studies that focused
on such concerns. One project found that rats exposed to the
common chemical Bisphenol-A had a more difficult time negotiating
a maze than their unexposed peers and displayed behaviors that
suggested they were suffering from some kind of Attention Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder. Another study found that female rats
whose mothers had been exposed to the common endocrine-disrupting
herbicide Glufosinate demonstrated extreme aggression towards
other rats.
While more research is needed, such findings clearly point out
that hormone-disrupting chemicals have great potential to become
“the new lead. ” They are a class of materials that
are just as dangerous and equally in need of severe restrictions,
if not an outright ban.

Research 2000; 83: 1-22.

Long
ago, in a marketplace far, far away, you could only find our
products in natural food stores and co-ops. If, that is, you
were lucky. The fact was that Seventh Generation products were
about as rare as a tasty tomato in January. We've come a long
way since then, and recently we went further still by adding
a number of new, major grocery chains to the roster of retailers
now stocking our healthier products.
As the leading brand of environmentally-friendly, non-toxic
household products in the country, we're dedicated to making
sure our products can be found in every supermarket from sea
to shining sea. That's not just because it's good for our bottom
line, but because it's good for the planet's balance sheet as
well.
Recently, we've added a host of new grocery chains to our master
list of those carrying Seventh Generation products. If you've
had trouble finding us locally, that job may have just gotten
easier with the addition of these new chains to our rapidly
growing family:
- Roche
Bros./Sudbury Farms (Massachusetts)
- Kings
(New York and New Jersey)
- Heinen's
Fine Foods (Ohio)
- FreshDirect
(New York City via internet order and delivery)
- Safeway
(1,800 stores throughout the U.S.)
- Giant
Eagle (Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania)
- Albertsons
(2,400 stores in 38 states)
- Shoppin'
Cart (Oregon)
- Hannaford
(Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont)
In
welcoming these new supermarkets to the fold, Seventh Generation
president Jeffrey Hollender said, "Consumers want choices, and
retailers are realizing that Seventh Generation gives those
consumers a safe, effective and competitively priced choice
to buy safer household and personal care products. Unlike most
traditional brands, we list the ingredients on our cleaning
product labels, so consumers know they're free of the toxic
chemicals commonly found in most other products. Consumers also
know that they work as well or better than traditional brands
and cost about the same per use as our competitors."
We'll be entering more grocery stores and retail chains in the
months to come. Keep your eyes on this space for announcements
that will help make it easier for everyone to use products that
are healthier for their families and safer for our world. In
the meantime, if you're having trouble finding the Seventh Generation
products you need to make that important difference, use our
web site's handy store finder at .
Just enter your city, state, and/or zip code in the space provided;
select your preferred distance range; and hit enter. That's
all it takes to learn where you'll find us waiting!

They
call it the World Wide Web, but lately we've been wondering
if maybe they should change that name to the World Guide Web.
Online guides are proliferating at a remarkable rate, and this
month we have two that you need to know about. One is a literally
fishy guide to healthier eating, and the other will help you

Confused about all the warnings about fish? So are we. It seems
like not a week goes by without an advisory about one kind of
fish or another that those concerned about their health should
avoid. That's why we were glad to see a new site from Physicians
for Social Responsibility and the Association of Reproductive
Health Professionals. In addition to background information
about the issue of mercury-poisoned fish, it features a printable
guide to healthier consumption called Healthy Fish, Healthy
Families. The first safe fish consumption guide written
by physicians and health professionals for consumers, the new
resource provides advice that's more precautionary (read: safer)
and recommendations that are more comprehensive than those found
in the guidelines recently announced by the Food & Drug
Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency. The
guide urges women of child-bearing age and children to avoid
fish that are highest in mercury and PCBs, and shows not only
which fish are most and least contaminated, but how often it's
safe to enjoy the many species available for consumption in
today's marketplace. There are two downloadable and printable
versions of the full-color guide: a brochure-length version
with useful background information and a smaller, pocket-sized
guide that can be pulled out at your local fishmonger's to help
you make the healthiest choice. If this sounds like a fish tale
that you can believe in, swim on over to .
A guide of a different sort is available from the Nova Scotia
Allergy and Environmental Health Association. Their Guide
to Less Toxic Products (GLTP) is one of the more comprehensive
we've ever seen on the internet. According to the home page,
its purpose is to provide information about the potential health
risks of commonly used products; help identify less toxic alternatives
for personal care, household cleaning, baby care, and household
pest control; and offer information to help consumers evaluate
products that aren't discussed in the guide in order to help
them make more educated choices. To that end, the guide offers
various introductory sections containing a wealth of background
information on the whys and hows of making healthier choices
at the store and at home. These educational pages are followed
by sections on personal care, baby care, cleaning and (coming
soon!) pest control products. Dozens of subcategories within
each of these main product sections breakdown the information
by type of product. Within each of these subcategories, the
site's authors present suggestions for safer products by brand
name, recipes for homemade versions, and countless useful tips
for healthier use of the products in question. Along the way,
you'll find lots of additional information about why information
like this is important, a look at the different kinds of hazards
consumer products represent, and a smattering of useful links
to other sites. A virtual book in online form, the GLTP
is a goldmine of information. While occasionally you'll come
across a piece of information relevant to Canadians only (for
example, there are certain recommended brands we've never seen
in the States), the vast bulk of the information it contains
can be used by all of us south of the border. If it sounds like
a guide for sore eyes, set your sights on the site you'll find
at .

When
it comes to the problem of environmental pollution and the woes
it so often creates, it can be difficult to tie all the threads
together and convince skeptics that something is really going
on. While the evidence is out there, it's often scattered in
far flung news reports and obscure scientific journals. Connecting
all these dots to make the important case that something needs
to be done can be a challenge. That's why we were pleased to
find a new book that sums up the evidence to date and offers
some suggestions on what we can do about it.
Our Toxic World, A Wake Up Call, by Dr. Doris Rapp, Environmental
Medical Research Foundation, 2004, is a look at all the ways
in which our world has become contaminated by chemicals and
technologies. In this fact-packed volume, best-selling author
Doris Rapp, MD, a pediatrician, allergist, and the woman some
have called “the mother of environmental medicine,”
has created a book that does something few other books on our
shelf attempt: Namely pull together the wide range of evidence
indicating that environmental pollution has reached crisis proportions
and integrate it throughout with advice from an expert on what
you can do to stay healthier in the face of this toxic burden.
Ten chapters filled with meticulously footnoted statistics,
study results, case studies, and other nuggets of enlightening
information cover chemical sensitivities and environmental illness,
allergies, indoor pollution, childhood development issues, reproductive
concerns, body burdens, pesticides, genetically engineered and
irradiated foods, and more. In addition to providing more evidence
than anyone could need that toxins in the environment and our
bodies have reached levels we ought to be concerned about, Dr.
Rapp also draws upon her many years of clinical experience to
offer a wealth of information consumers can use to protect their
families. From how to avoid innumerable different hazards to
ameliorating any effects from contamination that you may be
feeling, here are countless tips on healthier living, alternatives
to conventional treatments, detoxification and diet strategies,
and other helpful advice. A series of appendices at the back
of the book contain resource guides to help readers get in touch
with appropriate health professionals and access diagnostic
and treatment testing for themselves and their homes. There
are also resource guides to additional reading, and advocacy
and environmental organizations. While the book occasionally,
and somewhat inexplicably, veers off into a direction that left
us scratching our heads (at one point, for example, there's
a brief discussion on using pendulums to ascertain food and
vitamin safety), the vast bulk of this volume is well-grounded
in top-notch science and reliable expert advice. For these and
many other reasons, we think it's an invaluable compendium of
information and advice that everyone should read.
