The War in Iraq Cost the United States
$113,377,563,338
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed."
President Dwight D. Eisenhower
April 16, 1953

War affects everyone, not just those directly involved in the fighting. This webpage is a simple attempt to demonstrate one of the more quantifiable effects of war: the financial burden it places on our tax dollars.

To the right you will find a running total of the amount of money spent by the US Government to finance the war in Iraq. This total is based on estimates from the Congressional Budget Office.

WHY IS THIS A HUGE DEAL?

A TRILLION Is One Thousand BILLION (1,000,000,000,000)

A BILLION Is One Thousand MILLION (1,000,000,000)

Why is this a huge deal? Well if someone were to give you one Billion ($1,000,000,000) and the only condition for you was to simply count the money first before using it, that would seem like a easy condition to meet. - But not really, you see if were to count out one Billion ($1,000,000,000), nonstop without sleep or eating 24 hours a day 7 days a week, 365 days a year, it would take Thirty-Nine (39) years to just verbally count out one Billion.

Now if you were to just verbally count out One Trillion ($1,000,000,000,000) nonstop without sleep or eating 24 hours a day 7 days a week, 365 days a year, it would take Fifty Five Thousand (55,000) years to just verbally count out One Trillion.

Since TRILLION and BILLION are difficult numbers and volumes to imagine and comprehend, so I thought putting these huge figures into a real world perspective, an understandable volume of something important to all of us, may help us to realize what are we doing and how big a damage we are inflicting upon our one and only HOME, Planet Earth:

Two Billion (2,062,281,600) Plastic Bags Ago, Dumped In Trash, Was Yesterday, Just 24 Hours Ago!

One Billion (1,440,000,000) Plastic Water Bottles Ago, Dumped In Trash, Was A Month Ago, Just 30 Days Ago!

A Billion (1,000,000,000) Seconds Ago - It Was 1959.

A Billion (1,314,000,000) Minutes Ago Persian Emperor Kourosh The Great, Wrote The First Charter Of Human Rights 2500 Years Ago.

A Billion (1,000,000,000) Hours Ago - Our Ancestors Were Living In The Stone Age.

Six Billion (6,027,397,260) Dollars Ago - Was Only 24 Hours Ago, At The Rate Washington DC Spends Our Money.

Sincerely,

Bahram Maskanian
